by October 24, 2019–The Mount St. Mary’s men’s and women’s cross country teams had a trio of athletes Northeast Conference weekly awards, announced today by the conference office. Will Merritt was named the NEC Men’s Athlete of the Week while Grant West (Osage/Kaw) collected men’s Rookie of the Week honors. On the women’s side, Maddie Kole was selected as the NEC Women’s Athlete of the Week.
Merritt earns the men’s NEC Athlete of the Week award for the second time in three weeks after an impressive run at the Princeton Invitational this past Saturday. Merritt finished the eight-kilometer course at Princeton in a time of 24:29.1 to finish in 18th place out of the field of 235 runners. Grant West traversed the eight-kilometer course in a tie of 26:04.8 to earn his second NEC Rookie of the Week award. Maddie Kole finished 28th in the field of 207 runners at Princeton to earn her second NEC Women’s Athlete of the Week accolade this season. Kole had a time of 22:13.8 on the 6,170-meter course to pace the Mountaineers at Princeton.
The Mount cross country team will send some runners to the Lebanon Valley Last Chance to Run Fast Invitational on Friday before heading to the NEC Championships hosted by Central Connecticut on Saturday, November 2.
