Volleyball season is in full conference play at the college level these days and Indian Country volleyball players are making their efforts count as they march towards the conference post season tournaments. Here are some results from our players after Friday and Saturday’s games:
Bradley Nash – New Mexico State/Navajo
It took five sets and a comeback from being down 2-1, but the New Mexico State volleyball team remained unbeaten in WAC play after defeating Bakersfield, 25-22, 18-25, 16-25, 26-24, 15-8, on Saturday afternoon inside the Pan American Center. Junior Outside Hitter Bradley Nash (Navajo) had 6 kills and 9 digs to earn 8.5 points for the Aggies.
Alicia Ostrander – Nebraska/Oglala-Lakota
The No. 8 Nebraska volleyball team spoiled Iowa’s home opener with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-16 sweep at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday night. The Huskers, playing just their second true road match of the season, moved to 8-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play, both wins coming against the Hawkeyes (8-5, 0-2 Big Ten). Alicia Ostrander (Oglala) led the Huskers with 11 Kills on the evening.
Marilyn Sherbondy – North Carolina Central/Zuni-Pueblo
The North Carolina Central University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 25-10, 25-11) match, as the Eagles (0-1) opened Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play on the road, falling to the North Carolina A&T Aggies (1-0). Marilyn Sherbondy (Zuni), a defensive specialist, had a game high 15 digs in the contest.
Lauren Schad – University of San Diego/Cheyenne River Sioux
The 24th-ranked University of San Diego women’s volleyball team outlasted Gonzaga University, 3-2, Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. With the 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18, 17-15 win, the Toreros improve to 9-5 overall, remain perfect in WCC play at 2-0. Lauren Schad (CRS) had 4 kills and 3 block assists on the night for the Toreros.
Naomi Whitehair – UTEP/Navajo
UTEP forced UNT into five sets as the Miners registered more kills, blocks, and digs than the Mean Green. However, UTEP’s persistent effort was not enough to keep the Orange and Blue from falling, 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 25-20, 24-26, 16-14) to the Mean Green on Friday night. UTEP will look to bounce back when it plays host to FAU at 12 p.m. (MT) on Sunday. Naomi Whitehair (Navajo), a defensive specialist for the Miners, has 11 digs in the match and a team high 2 service aces on the night.
Haskell Indian Nations University Women’s Volleyball – Multiple Tribes represented.
Indian Country’s only All-Native American squad was on a five game winning streak as they opened conference play against Oklahoma Wesleyan University but they were unable to continue the win streak and they fell to the Eagles 25-19,18-25,13-25,20-25 to start MCAC conference play (0-1) and moved to (8-10) on the season. Aspen Shepard (Navajo) paced the Lady Indians with 10 kills on the evening and Tiffany Runs Through (Assiniboine) added 9 kills as well. Skye Norwood (Choctaw) had a game high 19 digs for the Indians.
