Recruiting/Signings:
- Fort Yukon, Alaskan Kandace Carroll, Gwich’in nation, recently signed a letter of intent to play at Little Big Horn college in Crow Agency, Montana. Carroll, is the reigning 1A state player of the year for Alaska and holds the state single game record of 51 points.In her senior season as a Fort Yukon Eagle, Kandace averaged 30 points per game, scoring 48 in her highest total of the season. She pulled down a season-best 19 rebounds and averaged 12 boards per game. In her best game, she recorded 12 assists, bumping her season average to nine assists per game. - Staying in the state of Alaska, Brianna Kirk, Notak tribe, and 2A state player of the year (Yeah, two NDN girls POY in AK) recently signed with the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. she led Napaaqtuggmiut School to a sixth-place finish at the Alaska state tournament this past season. She averaged 30.0 points per game during the regular season, but in the regional tournament, Kirk poured in 51 points in the first round and averaged 39 points per game over four contests to help the Lady Lynx qualify for the state tournament for the first time during her career and the first time since 1998. - And coming a little more south stateside, Cherokee Nation citizen Tanner Dearman, signed his letter of intent to play baseball for for perennial powerhouse Wichita State University, otherwise known as the Shockers! 🙂 Some of Dearman’s baseball accomplishments include helping Anadarko High School to the Class 4A state semifinals in 2011 and being named All-State Honorable Mention for the same year and he holds a 3.7 grade point average. - Lastly but not all of NDN countries signings, two-time Comanche High School State Wrestler Garrison McCauley(Choctaw Tribe) inked as one of the University of Oklahoma’s newest wrestling team members. His coach Miller said, “Garrison broke five school records this year. He is an outstanding wrestler, but one of the things that gets him to OU is that he is a 4.0 student and has a very high ACT score!” Hear that kids, HIGH ACT SCORE!! Congrats to Garrison!! Top News & Highlights:
- The top news story of the week, we thought anyway :), was Western New Mexico University golfer Faylyn Beyale (Navajo) a junior, tied for 1st place at the 2012 NCAA Division II Women’s Central Regional championships held at the Sierra Del Rio golf course in Elephant, New Mexico. Beyale’s three day total was a 232 (73-82-77) which included a thee hour rain delay on the final day. Beyale and her fellow teammates will now go on and compete at the NCAA Nationals to be held later this month. Good luck to Faylyn and the Mustangs!! - Have you heard of Sheldon Wilson? Comanche tribe, well unless you have been living under a rock (not that there is anything wrong with that, we like rocks!) you know that this guy has done it all at Anadarko High School in Oklahoma,but most recently he was named to the prestigious Oil Bowl football team for the state of Oklahoma. This All-Star football game pits the best Texas players against the best Oklahoma players in a border showdown that rivals the “Red River Rivalry”. Okay back to that rock thing, Sheldon also was recently crowned State Champion in track and field for the long jump and was a forward for the Anadarko High school basketball team that won the Silver ball. - Native American Olympians, what names does that conjure up for you? Yeah, me too. Jim Thorpe! Well, did you know that it his (and others, more shortly) 100 year anniversary since he competed and won Gold in the games in Stockholm, Sweden? but did you also know Duke Kahanamoku (Native Hawaiian), Andrew Sockalexis (Penobscot) and Lewis Tewanima (Hopi) also represented the United States that year? The Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. will present a new exhibition called “Best in the World: Native Athletes in the Olympics.” The exhibition opens Friday, May 25 but they will have other presentations throughout the summer including visits by Billy Mills! - Got Softball? Herkimer County Community College softball player Krista Oakes (St. Regis Mohawk) has been named Mountain Valley Conference Player of the Year. Oakes was also named to the Mountain Valley All-Conference team, the JUCO sophomore from the Akwesasne Reservation was named to the NJCAA 2nd Team All-American last year as a Freshman so yeah, she can ball! The All-American teams for this year haven’t been named yet but don’t be surprised to see Krista’s name on it, we’ll follow up on it! Great job Krista! - Wow, this is a lot to take in so we’ll try to keep is short this time so you can just cruise the website for yourself. “Crooked Arrows” held a special world premiere in Syracuse, New York this past week with the full on red carpet and media frenzy, my cool pal Ernie Stevens, III was on hand as one of the co-producers of the movie and said they had a great turnout and are getting good responses from the non-native entertainment world about the movie. So if you aren’t doing anything on May 18th or June 1st, check out the opening day in your area, here are some locations and watch the movie trailer!
