COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The first tournament of the year is in the books for NM State men’s golf and the Aggies are off to a red-hot start. The Aggies posted the second-lowest score of the day (-7) to make a late climb up the leaderboard. NM State wrapped up the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational with a third place finish, tying with San Jose State and settling behind Colorado and Colorado State.
Aidan Thomas (Laguna Pueblo) and Garrison Smith went on an absolute tear through the front nine holes, carding ten birdies as a duo. Smith fired an impressive 30 (-6) on the front to surge up the leaderboard. Thomas went on a run of his own, birdieing holes four, five, seven, and nine to card a 33 (-3) at the turn.
A birdie on 18 by Smith broke the deadlocked tie between the duo, giving Smith an outright third-place finish. Thomas finished just one stroke behind Smith, shooting 208 (-6) in the event hosted by Air Force.
The Aggies will be back in action at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate on September 23 and 24 in Albuquerque. Last year, Thomas was the event in his hometown, shooting a 207 (-9) over the 54 holes.
