No. 25 Haskell Indian Nations University Women’s Basketball Outlasts Southwestern Christian University for a 48-45 Win

(Lawrence, Kansas) – The No. 25 Haskell Indian Nations University women’s basketball team improved to (2-1) on the season after escaping Southwestern Christian University Eagles with a 48-45 win at Coffin Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon.

Coming off of a loss to No. 4 Morningside College only a few days ago, the Indians were eager to get back in the win column.

Haskell was led by junior Tyler Sumpter (Nixon, NV) who had a game-highs of 13 points and 4 steals. The only other player in the game with double-digit points was Haskell’s Tinaya Murphy (Los Lunas, NM) who had 11 points coming off the bench.

In the first two quarters of play Haskell would struggle from the field as the shots would not fall from any place on the court. Haskell would only shoot 16% from the field yet only trailed 18-27 at the half as SCU would only shoot 38% from the field.

In the 2nd half, Haskell came out with a little more fire on offense and defense to quickly erase the 9 point defecit. While the Indians improved their shooting, it was still below the season average and the SCU Eagles were able to stay close with the Indians. In the final minutes, Haskell would take a 1 point lead and hold on for the win by making some free throws at the end.

Senior Cerissa Honena-Reyes had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals for Haskell.

The Lady Indians will be on the road at McPherson, Kansas against McPherson College and Kansas Wesleyan University on November 4-5, 2016. Visit www.haskellathletics.com for more information on game times.
