SALEM, Ore. – NU’s Mariah Stacona’s 23 points help lead the Eagles to an 82-70 Cascade Conference win over Corban University tonight in the C.E. Jeffers Events Center.
Stacona tallied 16 of her 23 points in the first half to go along with 3 assists and 3 steals as the Eagles would take a 40-35 lead into halftime. Mariah hit 50% of her 3-point attempts while teammate Kalee Fowler scored 9 points and also hit 50% of her shots.
Corban took a 20-16 lead with 9:20 left in the second quarter, but NU would go on a 13-8 run over the next 6 minutes as Stacona would complete a 3-point play after being fouled on a driving lay-up giving the Eagles a 29-28 lead with 3:21 on the clock. A 3-pointer by Andie Kristinat and two free throws by Jackie Bento would put NU up 40-33 with 21 seconds to go in the half.
Northwest U would continue to lead the entire second half and with 3:53 left in the third quarter, Kalee Fowler would sink a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 58-43 lead. Stacona’s jumper with 1:23 left on the clock would give NU their largest lead at 62-48, but Corban would outscore NU 5-0 the reminder of the quarter to cut the NU lead to 62-53 at quarter’s end.
The Eagle would come out strong to start the final period and a 9-4 run, capped off by a Miranda Langenhorst lay-up ibn the paint would stretch the NU lead to 71-57 with 5:46 to go in the game. Corban would come back to cut the Eagle lead to 8, 73-65, at the 3:41 mark, but that would be the closest they would get as NU would outscore Corban 6-1 to make it a 79-66 game with 1:21 as they would go on to post the CCC victory.
In addition to her 23 points, Stacona also added 5 assists and 6 steals for Northwest U (5-8, 2-3 CCC). Kalee Fowler scored 19 points hitting 3 of 4 3-pointers for 75%; Hannah Carlson scored 15 points; and Miranda Langenhorst scored 11 points and led the team with 9 rebounds.
Corban (7-6, 3-3 CCC) was led by Emily Yost’s 17 points and 5 rebounds. Lindsay Asplund added 12 points for the Warriors who shot 50% for the game (28-56), but were forced into 25 turnovers by the Eagle defense.
