RayQuan Evans (Crow): Family-based Support As A Florida State Seminole Basketball Player

By Dan Ninham (Oneida)

The Florida State Seminoles are 17-3 and 7-2 in the ACC. One of the players on the team is Crow tribal member RayQuan Evans.

RayQuan Evans, 6-4, junior guard for the Florida State Seminoles always knows where he came from. He is family-based from the Crow Tribe and his hometown is Billings, Montana.  RayQuan is the son of LaVern OldElk and Isreal Evans.

His journey to the ACC and Florida State began at Billings Skyview HS and two years at North Idaho College followed. He had stellar careers at both schools.

RayQuan graduated from Billins Skyview HS in 2017. He earned Class AA All-State First Team averaging 18.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.3 apg and 2.1 spg.

In his two seasons at North Idaho he led the team to a 56-10 record. RayQuan scored a career-high 47 points vs. Everett Community College (WA). He was named the Northwest Athletic Conference Basketball Athlete of the Year in 2019.

“My tribe is very family-based so when it comes to being an athlete, I think of my teammates as a family and also as family members,” said RayQuan.  “My family and our program at Florida State are very big on academic success.  Taking care of my academics is very important.”

“I have been positively influenced by members of my family, my Florida State teammates, close friends and coaches and players from my junior college,” said RayQuan. “My family and friends as well as basketball are my passions. I have chosen to leave home and my family a number of times to play basketball.  I love my family and playing basketball and I appreciate my family support for me to realize my dreams of playing the sport I love,” added RayQuan.

“We need to follow our dreams and give everything as we participate in 100 percent of effort,” said RayQuan.
