Robert Iron Shell (Sioux) Earns All-American Honors in Two Events at NAIA Indoor Nationals

Raheem Cowan made it look easy as he claimed the triple jump crown at the 2015 NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Geneva, Ohio.  Cowan also anchored the Cliff’s 4x400m relay team which finished third in the nation with a time of 3:12.70.

Cowan won the triple with a bound of 15.40m (50-06.25), edging the competition by over a foot and a half.  It is his third national championship in the triple jump and second indoors as he also earned the indoor title in 2013.  Last year, he finished second at the indoor championships.  He was joined on the 4x400m squad by Rusty Muncy, Alan Gerdes and Robert Iron Shell.  Joe Roden did not run in the finals, but ran a leg during the prelims. The third place finish by the 4×4 bettered last year’s fourth place finish at the indoor championships and is the highest-ever result for a BC men’s relay team on the national stage.  Like Cowan, Iron Shell (Rosebud Sious Tribe) also earned individual all-American honors as he finished fourth in the 400m with a clocking of 47.93.  Andrea Urban, competing in her first-ever nationals in the shot put, was unable to record a mark.  Her best throw heading into nationals was 13.01m.
