The San Jose Earthquakes locked up the final spot in the Audi 2017 MLS Cup Playoffs in dramatic fashion on Decision Day presented by AT&T and who else but Chris Wondolowski powered the 3-2 win against Minnesota United FC.
Wondolowski scored the Quakes’ second goal to give his side a 2-1 lead in the 55th minute and then provided the assist on Marco Ureña’s game-winning goal in the 93rd minute. The performance earned him a spot on MLSsoccer.com’s Team of the Week. Teammates Danny Hoesen and Florian Jungwirth earned spots on the bench for their performances against the Loons.
New York City FC’s David Villa joins Wondolowski up top on this week’s team after scoring a brace in NYC’s 2-2 draw against Columbus Crew SC. The two goals put him on 22 goals for the season, second-most in MLS this season and two behind Golden Boot winner Nemanja Nikolic.
Thanks to their six-goal outburst against Orlando City SC, the Philadelphia Union placed Fafa Picault and Ilsinho on the team this week with CJ Sapong earning a spot on the bench. All three scored two goals against the Lions.
