MILWAUKEE – Marquette had six players score in double figures on Monday evening and held off a hot-shooting Chicago State squad, 91-74, at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Freshman forward Henry Ellenson scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year in the victory. The Golden Eagles (9-2) also received 18 points and six assists from Duane Wilson off the bench, while Luke Fischer added 14 points and eight boards. Sandy Cohen (Oneida Tribe) added 11 Points
Chicago State (4-10) was led by a career-high 26 points from Fred Sims Jr., who knocked down 6-of-9 shots from deep.
The Golden Eagles will have the the next three days off before gathering at the Al McGuire Center for practice on Christmas night. They will next face Presbyterian at the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Sunday, Dec. 27 at 1 p.m.
Postgame Notes:
• This was the seventh meeting all-time between the Golden Eagles and Cougars and first since 2008. Marquette remained unbeaten in the series with the win, moving to 7-0 all-time against Chicago State and 11-2 all-time against teams from the Western Athletic Conference.
• Leading 17-16 at the second media timeout, MU embarked on another 11-0 run, sparked by a pair of Sandy Cohen III triples, to take a commanding 28-16 lead with 8:47 left in the first half.
• MU led by 23 points at the break despite Chicago State shooting 52 percent (12-23) from the field, including 5-for-12 from long distance. MU shot an efficient 51 percent (19-37) from the field and 6-for-14 from three.
• Marquette finished the game with a 42-28 rebound edge, including a 24-9 advantage with 12 offensive rebounds at the half.
• In the win, Marquette put six players in double figures, marking the fifth time that five or more players have reached 10-or-more points this season. MU was led by Henry Ellenson’s 19 points, while Duane Wilson (18), Luke Fischer (14), Jajuan Johnson (12), Sandy Cohen III (11) and Haanif Cheatham (10) also poured in double figures.
