Despite a valiant 27-point effort from Katie Davidson, the IU Indianapolis women’s basketball team fell to the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, 82-55, on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Jaguars to 5-15 on the season, and 4-7 in Horizon League play.
The two teams started off closely, with IU Indy holding a slim 23-22 lead midway through the second quarter. Davidson was outstanding early, scoring 11 of her 27 points in the first 10 minutes to keep IU Indy within striking distance.
However, after the first quarter, the Mastodons ramped up their defense. Purdue Fort Wayne went on an 18-6 run over the final 5:30 of the first half, fueled by four Jaguars turnovers and on-point shooting. The Mastodons were red-hot during that stretch, hitting 7-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-4 from behind the arc, and only committing one turnover.
The second half saw the Mastodons seize control early, mounting a 20-4 run to push their lead to 27 points. The run continued through the third quarter as Purdue Fort Wayne outscored IU Indy 27-7, with PFW building a commanding 72-39 advantage by the early minutes of the fourth. From there, the Mastodons never looked back, eventually pushing their lead to as many as 33 points.
In addition to Davidson’s 27 points, Shania Nichols-Vannett contributed 19 points for the Jaguars. However, the rest of the IU Indy squad struggled offensively. Faith Stinson added seven rebounds and two blocks while Jada Patton and Alexa Hocevar each swiped two steals.
