by BOSTON, Mass. – University of Louisville women’s lacrosse concluded the regular season with a 19-6 defeat at No. 1 Boston College on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 5-12 overall and 0-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, while the Eagles improve to 17-0 and 7-0 in league play.
“Boston College is one of the best teams in the nation and they showed that today,” said head coach Scott Teeter. “I thought we did a pretty good job of defending Sam Apuzzo and Kenzie Kent, especially in the first half. We just need to cut down some of our mistakes and take advantage of scoring chances when we get them.”
Louisville trailed 3-0 to start, but Alex McNicholas got the Cardinals on the board just under eight minutes into the game. It marked the eighth time this season that McNicholas has scored UofL’s first goal of the game.
Shayla Scanlan (Seneca Nation) then scored two goals at the end of the half, the second of which pulled Louisville within 9-4 at the half.
But, the Cardinals would not get any closer as the nation’s top team reeled off 10 straight goals to start the second half to take a 19-4 lead.
Scanlan scored Louisville’s first goal of the second half with 3:42 to go to halt BC’s scoring streak. It marked her fifth hat trick of the season.
Tessa Chad then scored her 56th goal of the season with one second remaining to make the final score 19-6.
The draw control was an issue for Louisville throughout as they finished the game with five draws to Boston College’s 21.
Rachel Florek had several strong saves in the first half to keep Louisville in the game. Overall, the Cardinals finished with nine saves to the Eagles’ seven. Florek had six saves, while Lexi Ball added three.
The Cardinals limited Boston College’s Apuzzo and Kent, the nation’s No.1 and No. 2 point scorers, to just a goal and an assist each.
Louisville opens play in the ACC Tournament against the very same Boston College team on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Boston.
