FULLERTON, Calif. – Shayleen Toehe (Navajo Nation) scored a team-high 16 points off the bench to help the SDC women’s basketball team defeat Hope International on Tuesday night 61-52.
With the win, the Hawks improved to 12-2 on the year and 2-1 in the GSAC. The Royals fall to 4-7 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
No other Hawk was in double figures. Saskia Giesselbach tallied nine points. Natalie Perales collected 10 rebounds to go with seven points.
SDC shot 32.8 percent from the floor and forced 22 turnovers.
After leading the first quarter by a point, the Royals tied the score after 20 minutes heading into the break.
The third quarter was where SDC broke away. Tied 30-30, Anessa Wolfblack hit back-to-back treys and added a jumper to give the Hawks a 38-30 lead with 3:34 remaining in the third. Toehe converted a layup with 45 second remaining as the Hawks led 42-36 after the third.
The Hawks scored seven of the nine points scored in the fourth giving SDC a 12-point lead and held on late with free throws.
SDC will hit the road again as they travel to Arizona Christian on Saturday in their next contest.
