EL CAJON, Calif. – Trying to avenge a loss earlier in the season against Arizona Christian, the Hawks were unable to hold off the Firestorm as SDC was defeated 70-60 Thursday night.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 13-7 overall and 3-6 in the GSAC.
Shayleen Toehe (Navajo) scored a team-high 20 points off the bench. She connected on five 3-pointers.
The Hawks started off slow and the Firestorm scored early and often. Ny Lam added one of her two free throws to give SDC their fifth point of the first quarter but trailed 9-5 with 2:31 to play. Lam would later hit back-to-back treys to close out the first to claw back within two points.
SDC took their first lead in the game towards the end of the half. Anessa Wolfblack hit a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 2-point lead with 58 seconds to play. Toehe added one of her five triples at the end of the half, giving SDC a 5-point lead at the break.
The Hawks got their lead as large as six points in the third, but the Firestorm quickly erased their deficit and retook the lead just under four minutes left in the third. The Firestorm would lead the rest of the way.
ACU shot well from the floor, hitting 55.4 percent of their shots. The Hawks shot just 34.5 percent from the field but hit 10 3-pointers.
SDC looks to get a win on Saturday as they host Vanguard at 5:30 p.m. at Grossmont College.
