LOGAN, Utah – Utah State women’s basketball junior guard Shyla Latone (Zuni Pueblo) has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, March 6. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
It is the first time this year and in her career that Latone has been named USU’s student-athlete of the week.
With their sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
The native of San Diego, California, helped Utah State to a pair of wins against Fresno State last week as it posted a 96-90 overtime home win on Wednesday and an 80-75 comeback victory in the opening round of the 2022 Air Force Reserve Mountain West Women’s Basketball Championships on Sunday.
In the second win against the Bulldogs, Latone tied her season-high with 26 points, including 23 in the fourth quarter as the Aggies trailed by 14 points with 6:31 to play. In the fourth quarter, Latone was 6-of-6 from the field, including 5-of-5 from 3-point range and 6-for-6 at the free throw line. She also had eight rebounds and four assists in the game.
In the first meeting of the week with FSU, Latone scored 14 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
For the week, Latone averaged 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per game, while shooting 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from the field, 40.0 percent (8-of-20) from behind the arc and 85.7 percent (6-of-7) at the free throw line.
