WASHINGTON – The Tewaaraton Foundation has extended the due date for applications for the annual Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarships, presented by US Lacrosse, to April 30, 2014. Awarded to one male and one female student each year, the scholarship honors high school students of Haudenosaunee/Iroquois heritage who exemplify high character, leadership and academics both on and off the lacrosse field. Applicants are asked to submit an essay describing what the sport of lacrosse means to them as a Native American as well as two letters of recommendation and a high school transcript.
“We are thrilled to once again present these scholarships honoring the sport’s Native American heritage,” said Steve Stenersen, President and CEO of US Lacrosse. “We encourage outstanding young Iroquois student-athletes who aspire to achieve their full potential on the lacrosse field and in the classroom to apply and take advantage of this tremendous opportunity.”
Each scholarship recipient is awarded $5,000 for education. The Tewaaraton Foundation also covers travel expenses for winners and parents to attend the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony, which will take place on May 29 in Washington, D.C.
The 2013 scholarship winners were Cassandra Minerd, Onondaga Nation, Eel Clan and Robert McMicking, Cayuga Nation, Wolf Clan.
“My experience with the Tewaaraton showed me that if you put in the hard work and dedication, you will be rewarded at the end,” Minerd said. “The Tewaaraton [scholarship] has inspired me to continue to do my best academically and to keep playing my hardest for not only myself but for other native players.”
“It was a great honor to receive this scholarship,” McMicking added. “I am proud to not only represent myself, but my family, my school and my people. Hard work and dedication allowed me to be successful and experience this amazing event.”
