OLDS, Alta. – The Olds College Broncos put forth a solid effort, but they came up short as they fell to the Ambrose University Lions in four sets at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday.
Thundersky Walkingbear (Thunderchild First Nations) put forth an inspired performance for the Broncos (0-6), leading all attackers with 12 kills to go with four digs, while Jesse Stoddart had eight kills and Tyler Donnally added seven.
For Ambrose (2-5), Adrian Strandberg and Evan Mann had nine kills apiece, while Adam Morris had six of his own.
The Lions jumped ahead 7-2 early in the first set, and they did a good job of keeping that cushion in place en route to a 25-18 victory to go up a set.
The two sides traded blows early in the second set, and the Broncos managed to keep it close throughout before Ambrose polished off a 25-23 win to go up two sets to none.
The third set was also a see-saw affair, as the teams traded points and kept the frame close throughout. Olds College prevailed, winning the set 25-23 to extend the match before their home fans.
Ambrose ultimately put its stamp on the match in the fourth set, as they jumped ahead 11-5 and kept the Broncos at bay en route to a 25-18 victory to complete the weekend sweep.
Walkingbear was named The Pit BBQ Player of the Game for the Broncos, while Ryan Andres earned player of the game honours for Ambrose after recording 12 digs.
