COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University cross country runners Triston Charles (Navajo) and Tony Torres were both named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s All-Academic First Team and led a total of eight Mavericks —five men and three women— who were recognized on conference’s annual academic awards release, announced Thursday morning by conference officials.
To be eligible, student-athletes must carry a 3.30 or higher cumulative GPA, have been at the institution for at least two consecutive semesters and use a season of competition. The sports information directors from each conference member then select the 14-runner first teams based on a combination of their athletic and academic accomplishments. Other qualified student-athletes not selected for the first team receive Honor Roll status.
Charles, a redshirt freshman out of Farmington, New Mexico, holds a 3.89 GPA and is a pre-criminal justice major. He was CMU’s top runner at the RMAC Championships on Oct. 23 in Golden, Colorado and earned Second Team All-RMAC honors with his 20th place overall finish. Charles also has recorded two top-10 finishes this season, taking seventh at the Gig Leadbetter Maverick Stampede while leading the Mavs to their first team win since 2015. He also finished tenth at the Mountaineer/Cowboy Invite.
