(Lawrence, Kansas) – After leading her team to A.I.I. basketball championship title on Sunday,Haskell Indian Nations University’s Tyler Sumpter (Pyramid Lake Paiute) was named the Association of Independent Institutions Athlete of the Week on Monday.
Sumpter, who also was the MVP of the women’s championship, kicked things off in the A.I.I. tournament with 24 points against Northern New Mexico before racking up 15 against IU Northwest to propel the third-seeded Indians to the title game. On Sunday, she’d pick up another 19 as Haskell stunned College of the Ozarks, who were ranked third nationally.
Tyler joins Duelle Gore (Seminole Tribe of Florida), from the Haskell men’s teams, as the only two athletes named A.I.I. Conference players of the week for the Indians this season.
Haskell will now await their opponent and tip-off time in the NAIA Women’s Division II National Tournament that will be held in Sioux City, Iowa March 9th through 15th.
