by Vancouver Stealth forward Johnny Powless (Six Nations)was recently voted into some elite company when he was named one of five finalists for the Lou Marsh Award honoring Canada’s top athlete in 2014. Over the course of the year, Powless won the NLL Champion’s Cup with the Rochester Knighthawks, the Mann Cup with the Six Nations Chiefs and the Minto Cup with the Six Nations Arrows, where he served as team captain.
At just 21 years old, Powless’ resume includes three NLL Champion’s Cups, two Mann Cups, and a Minto Cup. The Mohawk Nation member also won the NLL’s Sportsmanship Award in 2013.
“It is a huge honor for Johnny to be named amongst Canada’s best athletes and extremely well deserved,” said Stealth President and General Manager Doug Locker.
“I’m humbled to be a finalist for the award,” said Powless. “I’d like to thank all my teammates, family and friends for their support.”
This year’s list of finalists also included champion bobsled pilot Kaillie Humphries, 2014 Lou Marsh Award winner, along with tennis players Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic, and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty.
The trophy, named after a former Toronto Star sports editor, is awarded annually to Canada’s top athlete as selected by representatives of Canada’s leading news organizations.
