by WACO, Texas — Sophomore guard Jase Febres tied a career high with 23 points, but The University of Texas Men’s Basketball team (15-13, 7-8 Big 12) fell in overtime 84-83 at Baylor (19-9, 10-5 Big 12) on Wednesday night at the Ferrell Center. Febres converted 8-of-15 from the floor, tying a career high with 7-of-14 shooting from three-point range, while adding 4 rebounds and 3 assists in a career-high 43 minutes.
Freshman guard Courtney Ramey notched his first collegiate double-double, scoring 17 points and dishing out a career-best 10 assists. Sophomore guard Matt Coleman III and freshman forward Kamaka Hepa (Inupiaq) each contributed 11 points.
UT opened the game hitting 4-of-5 from three-point range as the Longhorns took a 22-20 lead at the 10:13 mark. A 13-0 spurt sparked by Elijah Mitrou-Long allowed Texas to build a 14-point cushion (37-23) at the 3:19 mark. The Longhorns held Baylor to just six points over the final 7:43 of the first half, and UT led 40-29 at the break.
Febres began the second half knocking down four 3-pointers, as Texas increased its cushion to 19 points (55-36) at the 14:49 mark. An 11-0 run by Baylor trimmed UT’s lead to three (62-59) with 5:29 remaining. Coleman responded with a jumper that pushed the margin back to five (64-59) at the 4:57 mark.
Devonte Bandoo scored eight straight points for the Bears to tie the game at 64-64 with 2:52 left. Jared Butler knocked down a jumper to give the Baylor its first lead (69-68) since the 10:34 mark of the first half.
Febres notched his sixth 3-pointer to give Texas a 71-69 lead, but Butler answered with another basket to tie the game at 71-71 with 28 seconds left. Coleman missed a floater with 2 seconds left and the game went to overtime.
Hepa and Febres both connected from three-point range to put Longhorns ahead by six (81-75) at the 2:47 mark. Baylor responded with five straight points to cut UT’s lead to one (81-80) with 47 seconds left.
Mario Kegler knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Bears an 84-83 lead with 3.2 seconds left. The Longhorns completed a full-court pass, but Texas missed a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer.
