STILLWATER – Just hours after leading the Oklahoma State basketball team to its second straight victory, junior captains Cameron McGriffand Lindy Waters, III (Kiowa/Cherokee) were named Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Conference honorable mention.
These are the first career conference awards for McGriff and Waters, who stepped into the spotlight for the Cowboys in 2018-19. OSU has now had at least two players represented on the All-Big 12 team or the Associated Press All-Big 12 team since the league began in 1996-97.
Waters shot 45.3 percent from 3-point in 2018-19, which ranks third in the conference, and his 90.8 percent free throw mark is second. The key to OSU’s versatility, Waters played nearly every position on the floor in nearly every game. A native of Norman, Okla., Waters now has 136 career 3-pointers – which ranks 15th in OSU history – at a 41.8 percent clip, which is good for sixth best in school history.
The Cowboys will enter the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with momentum. After falling at No. 8 Texas Tech in overtime and to No. 13 Kansas in a nail-biter, Oklahoma State broke through with a 67-64 victory at Baylor and followed it up with an 85-77 win over West Virginia in the season finale.
OSU will be the No. 9 seed and will face the eighth-seeded Horned Frogs of TCU. The Cowboys and Horned Frogs split their regular season meetings. TCU knocked off OSU on a buzzer beater in Fort Worth, Texas, but Oklahoma State returned the favor with a 68-61 win in Stillwater.
Wednesday’s tipoff from the Sprint Center in Kansas City is slated for 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
