DURANGO, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College volleyball team concluded its Homecoming Weekend back-to-back on Saturday, falling in four sets (25-14, 25-23, 25-14 and 25-18) to Dixie State University.
Fort Lewis (5-10 overall, 1-5 RMAC), coming off a strong performance in Friday’s five-set victory over Westminster College, was unable to gain its footing on offense during Saturday’s contest, finishing the evening with 32 kills and 32 attack errors.
Part of the Skyhawks’ offensive woes were contributed to a strong net presence from the visiting Trailblazers (9-5 overall, 4-2 RMAC) as Dixie State produced 12 blocks.
Dixie State took the first set 25-14 before the Skyhawks roared back to even the match with a 25-23 win in Set Two, aided by a 10-3 run to open the set.
Fort Lewis powered down 12 of its 32 kills in Set Two and were led by senior outside hitter Ohiyah Shirley (Navajo), who backed up her 17-kill performance on Friday with a team-high 10 kills Saturday.
Junior outside hitter Alexa Treguboff followed with eight kills off the bench, while senior middle blocker Bailey Longacre chipped in five kills.
Defensively, freshman setter Payton Harmann led all Skyhawks with 13 digs to go with her 28 assists. Fellow freshman Kamryn Lopez joined her in double-figures with 11 digs.
As a team, Fort Lewis produced eight total blocks, led by sophomore Tye Wedhorn’s six block assists.
The Skyhawks will now hit the road for matches against Colorado State University-Pueblo (7 p.m. Friday) and New Mexico Highlands University (6 p.m. Saturday) next weekend before returning home for a mid-week matchup against Adams State University, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15.
