The Triton College women’s basketball team picked up their fifth consecutive victory in a 62-50 road win Dec. 7 at Elgin Community College. The win streak is the longest during the three years Marques Hatch has been head coach as his team improves to 7-4 this season.
Triton jumped out to a 24-13 lead after the first quarter and led by as many as 15 points before the Spartans (3-8) rallied to pull within a point midway through the third quarter. However, the Trojans never relinquished the lead and were able to reassert control of the game in the fourth quarter outscoring Elgin 16-9.
Bethany Baldwin (Forest County Potawatomi) had another solid game with 19 points and seven rebounds to spark the Triton attack. Jaelah Crosby (Evansville, Ind.) had 14 points and six rebounds. Zenobia Reeds (East St. Louis, Ill.) getting her first start since returning from injury finished with nine points, nine rebounds and four steals.
But the unsung hero in the win for the Trojans was back-up center Senia Pitts. The freshman from Walther Christian played 27 minutes, scoring eight points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
Triton had a strong week after Thanksgiving, winning all three games including a key 66-61 district win Dec. 5 over Morton College at the Collins Center.
Baldwin led the way against Morton with 23 points and nine rebounds. Davion Watt (Independence, Miss.) scored 15 points on five three-point field goals. Crosby added 10 points. Dajha Cooper (Elgin) pitched in eight points and eight rebounds.
The Trojans open a three-game home stand Tuesday night at 6 p.m. when host another district rival, Prairie State College at the Collins Center.
