Asenex Turney is a sophomore wrestler at Menominee Indian High School, Keshena, WI. He is a member of the Menominee Tribe and his parents are Amy and Tony Hill, Keshena, WI.
“The Menominee Tribe is behind me and supports me in everything I do,” said Asenex.
“My coach Kirk Bahr pushes me and makes me believe I can reach new heights,” said Asenex. “My mom encourages me in the classroom and on the mats. Our assistant coach Dale Hodkiewcz pushes me to do my best and is also a National Hall of Fame Member for wrestling.”
“I started wrestling in 6th grade and kind of had a hard time through last year,” said Asenex. “As a freshmen my record was 4-17. Over the Summer I attended a couple wrestling camps and worked out in the weight room almost every day. This year I have a record of 31-11. Hard work pays off. My older brother Alenex was a conference champion and I also have two brothers Emilio and Gregory on the team so wrestling runs in the family.”
“I have earned two varsity letters in football and two in wrestling,” said Asenex. “I made All Conference in wrestling as well as winning a regional championship. I am currently ranked honorable mention at 285 pounds for the state of Wisconsin and am the first wrestler from Menominee Indian HS to win over 30 matches as a 10th grader. I also made honor roll first quarter and first semester for academics at the high school.”
Asenex has positive words for others who may want to follow his leadership: “Don’t slack off in school or outside of school. It takes hard work to get better at any sport to achieve success.”
