Alexis Desjarlait (Ojibwe) Led Concordia Chicago with 14 Points as Cougars Fall to Marian University

RIVER FOREST, ILL. – The Concordia University Chicago women’s basketball team returned to Geiseman Gymnasium to take on the Marian University Sabres, but ultimately fell 75-62.

First Quarter

The Cougars opened up the game against the Sabres with Prentciss Gates (Gary, Ind.) scoring the first points of the game 2-0. The Sabres followed this by tying the game, however, they followed this up with a shot field goal 4-2. Each team would exchange layups, with MacGregor adding her name to the scoreboard 6-4.

The Sabres followed this with a field goal from the three-point line taking the lead 7-6. Kulig would respond with two jumpers giving the Cougars the advantage 10-7. The Sabres would be fouled, allowing them to bring the score to 10-9. Gates would shoot from deep to bring the Cougars 13-9.

However, the Sabres would respond swiftly, shutting the Cougars out and scoring sixteen points forcing the Cougars to use a timeout 25-13. Perry would end the quarter with a three-pointer making the Sabres have a single-digit lead 25-16.

Second Quarter

The Sabres would continue their lead with a field goal bringing the score 26-16. MacGregor would be fouled on a drive into the paint, allowing her to score a free throw 26-17. Kulig would continue this streak for the Cougars in the paint 26-19. However, the Sabres would respond to this run with their own 36-19. Alexis Desjarlait (Red Lake, Minn.) would add her name to the board with a field goal from the three-point range, reducing the Sabre lead to 36-22. 

Kayla Jackson (Worth, Ill.) would follow this up with free throws 39-34. The Sabres would then go to the free throw line bringing the score 41-27. However, Emma Nickerson (Lake City, Mich.) would add her name to the board with a three-pointer 41-27. The Sabres would follow this with a field goal of their own 44-27. The Sabres would end the quarter at the free throw line extending their lead to 46-27.

Third Quarter

Kulig would start the half for the Cougars by scoring the first point with a drive in the paint 46-29. On a drive, Kulig would be fouled, allowing her to add two points for the Cougars at the free throw line 46-31. Cydnei Mitchell (Aurora, Ill.) would follow this up at the free throw line scoring both at 46-33. 

MacGregor would continue the run for the Cougars 48-35. Kulig would continue her dominance, stuffing the Sabres and allowing the Cougars to continue their scoring run.

Desjarlait added to the Cougars run with a shot from deep, bringing the score to 48-38. The Sabres would end the Cougars run at the three-point line 51-38. Perry would follow this with a three-point lead of her own 51-41. MacGregor ended the quarter for the Cougars with a layup assisted by Nazuri Whigham (Naperville, Ill.) 54-43. 

Fourth Quarter

Perry would initiate the quarter for the Cougars from the three-point line 54-46. The Sabres from the free throw line would add to their lead 56-46, however, Desjarlait would follow this up with a three-pointer of her own 59-49. 

Whighan would be fouled, bringing her to the free throw line 59-50, forcing the Sabres to a single-digit lead. The Sabres would go on a four-point run 63-50. Desjarlait would end this run, by driving into the paint 63-52. Gates would follow this up at the free throw line 65-54. The Sabres would quickly respond in the paint 67-54. MacGregor would respond with a drive of her own 67-56.

The Sabres followed this up with a six-point run that was ended by Perry shooting deep 72-59. Desjarlait would follow this up from the same spot 73-62. The Sabres would close out the game with a thirteen-point lead 75-62.
