No. 6 MCC Women’s Basketball took down South Mountain on Saturday, 90-47 as they increased their winning streak to seven games.
MCC played an overall sound game against the Cougars. Defensively Mesa was on point as they forced 24 turnovers and were able to convert those takeaways into 30 points in the win.
The Lady T-Birds were not connecting from deep at their usual rate as they were 5-24 from downtown but were able to supplement that by pushing the pace often. MCC looked to get out and run as often as they could even off a made basket as they had 31 fast break points.
MCC had a strong first quarter as all their starters got on the scoreboard, posting 26 total points MCC shot 12-25 from the floor (48%).
The Lady T-Birds had a strong second quarter on the defensive end as they held SMCC to nine points in the frame, the Cougars to 4-14 (28.6%) from the floor.
Ashiian Hunter had a breakout third period for MCC as she went 4-8 from the field and had eight points. MCC put up 23 points in the quarter but allowed SMCC to have their best quarter of the game scoring 18 points on 7-21 (33.3%) shooting from the floor.
Mesa responded in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Cougars 23-7 in the period, only allowing two made field goals in the frame.
