Crownpoint, NM – On September 19, 2024, Adakai Yazzie, a proud member of the Chisi Dine’e (Apache Chiricahua) and born for Tachii’nii (Red Running into Water) from Pine Hill, NM, signed his letter of intent to join the NTU Skyhawks basketball team for the upcoming season. His family and Coach Michael McMillan were present to celebrate this significant milestone.
Adakai chose NTU for its supportive environment and its proximity to home. He is currently enrolled in the General Studies program, and he plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice law while also exploring other academic opportunities.
He decided to join the NTU basketball program because Coach McMillan offered him a chance to showcase his skills on the court. Adakai believes he can be a valuable asset to the team as they gear up for the season. His journey with basketball has had its ups and downs, but he feels NTU is the right fit for him, especially after the warmth and hospitality he experienced during his initial visits.
Adakai will wear jersey number 11 as a tribute to role models like Brady Roman, who played for NTU last season, and NBA star Kyrie Irving. “Brady has pushed me and helped me fall in love with basketball,” Adakai said. “He made the game simple for me to understand, and I truly appreciate that.”
Adakai is optimistic about this year’s team and enjoys the camaraderie with his new teammates. The team’s chemistry has made for an enjoyable experience, easing his transition into the program. He believes they are well-prepared for the upcoming season, especially with their first preseason game set for October 3, 2024.
Both NTU basketball teams will kick off their preseason at the Wildcat Den in Chinle, AZ, on Thursday, October 3. The women’s game starts at 5 PM, followed by the men’s game. Admission is $5, and doors will open at 4 PM. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience collegiate basketball within the Navajo Nation.
