TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 22/22 Alabama women’s basketball team defeated Georgia, 72-57, Sunday afternoon in Coleman Coliseum. The win marks the Crimson Tide’s 10th home victory of the season.
Aaliyah Nye led Alabama (18-5, 5-3 SEC) with 22 points and six made three-pointers, as she recorded her fourth game of the season with six or more made threes. Essence Cody followed Nye with 17 points, while collecting her second double-double on the year with a season-high 13 rebounds.
Sarah Ashlee Barker tied her career high with eight assists to go with nine points, with her and Zaay Green (4) combining for 12 of the team’s 18 assists in the contest.
Asia Avinger led Georgia (9-14, 1-8 SEC) in the scoring column, contributing 15 points off 7-for-16 shooting to go along with four rebounds, five assists and a steal.
How it Happened
- Alabama opened the game on an 8-2 run over the first 2:44, featuring a pair of threes by Barker and Nye
- The Crimson Tide defense was all over the floor as well, forcing seven Georgia turnovers in the first quarter alone
- Kristy Curry‘s squad buried five threes in the first period to hold a 26-11 lead at the end of the quarter
- Alabama’s offense maintained control to open the second quarter as well as it went on a 6-0 run before the media timeout to blossom the lead to a 20-point margin (37-15)
- The Crimson Tide defense picked up where it left off as well, holding the Bulldogs to just six points in the first six minutes of the period
- Nye caught fire to close out the quarter, scoring eight points in two minutes to give Alabama a commanding 49-22 lead at the half
- Georgia found some offensive momentum to begin the third quarter, as the Bulldogs outscored the Crimson Tide 14-6 in the first five minutes of the frame
- Following the media timeout, Alabama was able to hold onto a 57-42 lead despite not scoring for the final 3:45 of the quarter
- The Crimson Tide defense picked it back up in the final quarter, causing the Bulldogs to go scoreless for nearly four minutes
- Following the break, Alabama went on a quick 6-0 run over 1:19 to create more separation on the scoreboard with under three minutes to play
