Box Score HONOLULU, HI (February 24, 2015) – The Hawai’i Pacific Women’s Basketball Team (22-4, 17-2) clinched the regular season PacWest Championship, and the top seed in the PacWest Tournament, with a 103-75 win over visiting Dominican University of California (12-12, 9-9).
The Sharks added to their record win total with another dominating performance in front of a good crowd at the Neal Blaisdell Center.
HPU led the game from wire-to-wire; less than four minutes into the game the Sharks built a double-digit lead (14-4). Almost a quarter into the game, Dominican trimmed the lead to two at 23-21. However, fewer than three minutes later, HPU stretched the lead back out to 10 (33-23). HPU was not challenged the rest of the night.
Morganne Comstock was again unstoppable, scoring 34 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. Maybe more notable is the fact that the senior flirted with a triple-double with a career-high eight assists. It was also a historic night for Comstock as she broke the single-season scoring record with her 497th point of the season, passing Ashley Jenkins (490 in 2007-2008). The Seattle native’s 199 made field goals is also a new single-season record, passing Mana Hopkins (191 in 2011-2012).
Kylie Huerta was also sensational; she drilled four three-pointers in the first half to account for her 12 points. She racked up her third double-double of the season with 10 assists to go with five rebounds. Huerta currently ranks fifth in career assists at HPU, despite playing just this one season.
Chenise Peone (Colville Tribes) added 12 points and six rebounds. In the process, she set the single-season record for most three-pointers attempted. She is just two shy for most made three-pointers in a season.
Veanne Navarro was impressive, especially early on. The Modesto, CA native went 7-15 for 16 points. Jessi Reeves scored 12 points on 5-7 shooting and notched six rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench.
HPU will celebrate senior day on Saturday (February 28th) when Holy Names visits Moanalua High School at 1:00 pm.
