SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The University of San Diego women’s volleyball team picked up a thrilling 3-2 win over Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 21-7 overall, move to 14-3 in the WCC, and has locked up at least second place in the WCC. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 21-8 overall, and move to 12-5 in the WCC.
Lisa Kramer led the USD offense with 19 kills, while also recording five digs. Canace Finley was the second of four Toreros to record double-digit kills, as she had 17, while also recording three blocks, two solo. Jayden Kennedy recorded 12 kills, and has now reached double digit kills in four consecutive matches. Lauren Schad (Cheyenne River Sioux) was the final USD player in double digit kills, as she had 10, while also recording six blocks. Kristen Gengenbacher recorded 57 assists, and just missed a double-double with nine digs. Hunter Jennings recorded a team-best 18 digs, while Ryann Powell recorded a career-high 17 digs.
As a team, USD hit for a .146 clip, while the Broncos hit for a .159 clip. USD recorded 69 kills, while SCU had 53 kills. The Broncos out blocked the Toreros 22.0-10.0.
For the Broncos, Nikki Hess paced the offense with 22 kills, while hitting .276, and she recorded nine digs. Lacey Maas was the only other Bronco in double-digit kills, as she had 12 and recorded three blocks. Kristen Mead recorded 44 assists, and the SCU defense was paced by Danielle Rottman, who had 22 digs. Jensen Cunningham was big on the block for the Broncos, as she had 17 blocks.
The Toreros will return to action on Tuesday, as they host Loyola Marymount in a 6 p.m. WCC match inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
