NORFOLK, Neb. – The Northeast Community College women’s basketball team returned to the Cox Activities Center in Norfolk Tuesday for a showdown with Central Community College. The Hawks finished off the season sweep of the Raiders by a final score of 68-53.
Northeast (11-14, 7-9 ICCAC) topped Central 79-61 back on November 28 and picked right back up where they left off as Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.) tallied 27 points in the matchup of two Nebraska squads. The Hawks were locked in defensively as the Raiders knocked down just one of their 20 three-point shots and only had two assists compared to the 14 from Northeast. Clara Garrote added 14 points and eight boards as the Hawks will now have a few days now to get ready for No. 2 Kirkwood Community College on Saturday.
STAT SHEET:
Allison Richards (Pine Ridge, S.D.): 27 PTS, 5 REB
Clara Garrote (Salamanca, Spain): 14 PTS, 8 REB, 5 AST
Amber Lawson (Wynot, Neb.): 12 PTS, 7 REB
HEAR FROM THE HAWKS COACH:
Head Women’s Basketball Coach Matt Svehla on pulling away from the Raiders after the halftime break:
“We got going a little bit in the second quarter and we got up 10, and then they had some answers,” Svehla said. “It was a four-point game at halftime, so we had some work to do. I like how we came out in the third quarter. They did a good job of trying to lock up Allsion Richards, but Allison did a good job of staying patient. We found some nice shots and opened the game up.”
Svehla on battling No. 2 Kirkwood Saturday:
“We have a few days of practice and we’re going to have to play awfully well,” Svehla said. “They are a very good basketball team. We’ll be excited to play on our home floor.”
