Amira LaDuke (Ojibwe) scored a career-high 23 points for Augsburg University women’s basketball

MINNEAPOLIS — The Augsburg University women’s basketball team held an eight-point halftime advantage, but Saint Mary’s University outscored the Auggies by a 40-27 margin in the second half, claiming a 70-65 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over the Auggies on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Augsburg shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29) from the field in the first half, while Saint Mary’s shot 28.1 percent (9-of-32), as the Auggies built a 38-30 halftime advantage. But the Cardinals outscored the Auggies by a 22-14 margin in the third quarter, tying the game at 52-52 entering the final frame. Saint Mary’s outscored the Auggies 18-13 in the final quarter and outrebounded the Auggies by a 15-7 margin.
• One of the keys to the game was free-throw shooting. Saint Mary’s hit 21-of-27 from the charity stripe, compared to just 3-of-7 for Augsburg. Saint Mary’s also outrebounded Augsburg by a 39-33 margin in the game.
• Amira LaDuke (JR, Cass Lake, Minn./Cass Lake-Bena HS) scored a career-high 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the field to lead Augsburg, adding five rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.
• Wakinyela Bear (JR, Morrison, Colo./Meskwaki (Iowa) HS) scored 13 points with two steals.
• Katie Manecke (SR, Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) scored seven points, while Lani Fonoti (FY, Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) scored six points.
