ALAMOSA, Colorado — The Fort Lewis College cross country teams toed the starting line for the first time in 2019 on Saturday morning as they opened their respective seasons at the 26th annual Joe Vigil Invite, hosted by Adams State University at Cattails Golf Course in Alamosa.

The Fort Lewis women’s team headed home with a second-place finish out of five teams with a score of 55, trailing only hosts Adams State (15), while the men’s team placed third overall out of eight official teams with a score of 119.

Leading the pack for the women’s team in their 5K was sophomore Angel Curley (Navajo) as she crossed the finish line in 13th-place with a time of 20 minutes, 7.4 seconds.

“Angel has so much natural speed and natural talent,” Sublett said. “It’s beautiful to watch her run. I think if we can get a little bit more mileage and endurance in her as we progress through the season, the sky is the limit with her.”

Close behind her was fellow sophomore Krista Benze (20:42.6) in 16th place and junior Makiah Salzano (21:03.3) in 18th place to round out the Skyhawks in the top-20.
