Chelsey Biegler (Cheyenne River Sioux) Scores 14 as Yellow Jackets Drop Thunderwolves 59-51

PUEBLO, Colo. – Led by 16 points from Logan Cowan, the Black Hills State University women’s basketball team got revenge in a big way Friday night defeating Colorado State University-Pueblo 59-51 Friday night in Pueblo, Colorado.

The Yellow Jackets avenged a 75-51 loss on January 21 to the Thunderwolves in the Young Center and picking up a much-needed road victory as the Yellow Jackets are jockeying for a top-four position in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The victory improves Black Hills State’s record to 14-10 overall and 12-8 in the RMAC. The Thunderwolves fall to 14-9, 12-7.

Fighting a zone defense, the Yellow Jackets made seven first-half 3-point baskets for a 29-23 intermission lead. Black Hills State twice held leads of nine points with both times coming off the hands of Chelsey Biegler (Cheyenne River Sioux tribe).

The first time, Biegler sank a long-range basket to give the Green and Gold an 11-2 lead. She again boosted the lead to nine points with 11:22 remaining when she sank three-straight free throws for the 17-8 lead.

After the Thunderwolves knotted the game at 23-all, the Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 6-0 run as Dakota Barrie and Taylor Trohkimoinen each sank 3-point baskets.

Even though the Yellow Jackets held the lead for much of the second half, CSUP kept the pressure on not letting the Green and Gold stretch a lead larger than six points. The Thunderwolves grabbed a lead as late as 5:01 on the game clock when Ana Gurau sank a 3-point basket for the 49-48 lead.

However the Yellow Jackets answered quickly with a jumper from Cowan to regain the lead at 50-49.

Black Hills State then held Colorado State-Pueblo to just two points over the final 3:50 while prevailing for the 59-51 win.

Following Cowan’s 16 points, Biegler added 14 points and Courtney Patterson had 10. The final three points from Patterson came on a 3-point basket with 1:06 remaining to give the Yellow Jackets the final push of momentum for the victory.

The Thunderwolves were led by Katie Nehf with 12 points while Gurau added 10.

Cowan nearly completed the double-double with eight rebounds while Ashley Piper grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for CSUP.

The Yellow Jackets play their final regular season road game at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
