Continuing to play well at home, the Cowley College softball team swept a doubleheader against Barton Community College Sunday at Ed Hargrove Field. The Lady Tigers run-ruled Barton 18-2 in the opener before holding off the Cougars 5-4 in game two.
“Offensively we were very strong and had great quality at bats,” Cowley head coach Jenny Hoyt said. “It was good to see our hitters get in a rhythm and keep a rally going through the innings.”
Cowley, which is 6-0 at home, improves its record to 7-5 on the season. Barton is now 4-10.
In game one, Cowley scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, four more in the second, and seven in the third to lead 18-2. The game was halted after the top of the fifth inning due to run-rule.
The Lady Tigers benefitted from 10 walks and five Cougar errors, while Christian Wind and Kayla McClellan homered in the victory.
Brooke Mason (3-2) earned the win as she allowed only two hits and one run in four innings pitched. Sydni Williams pitched a scoreless fifth inning to finish off the victory.
In game two, Cowley would get a grand slam home run from McClellan in the bottom of the first inning and hold on for the 5-4 win.
McClellan homered for the second straight game and drove in four runs.
“Kayla was huge for us in both games,” Hoyt said.
Sophomore Ashlynn Mercer went the distance on the mound to even her record at 2-2 on the season. Mercer allowed only three hits and two earned runs as the Tiger defense committed five errors.
“It was good to see our pitchers attack their hitters,” Hoyt said. “Our pitchers only allowed five hits in 13 innings to go along with 13 strikeouts.”
