ASHLAND – Fourth-ranked Southern Oregon took the drama out of its first home game within minutes Saturday afternoon and put five players in double figures in an 89-59 win over The Evergreen State College at Mountain Avenue Gym.
Autumn Durand‘s seventh double-double of the season was an 18-point, 10-rebound effort on 6-for-8 shooting that was accompanied by 38 bench points in the Raiders’ 10th consecutive victory. Majerle Reeves scored 15 points on 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range – making her 13-for-20 in SOU’s last four games – and fellow reserves Daranda Hinkey (Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone) scored 10 points & had two steals and Casey Williams (nine points, six rebounds) quickly made themselves at home, too.
SOU (10-1 overall, 3-0 Cascade Conference) extended its conference home winning streak to 22 games. In the last two seasons, eight of 11 wins have been decided by 30 points or more.
The Raiders were up 19-4 seven minutes into the game after a 15-0 surge that started with consecutive 3-point makes by Durand, Reeves and Williams.
Toria Bradford tallied 15 points, and Demi Sahlinger had 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting to go with four assists and three steals. The Raiders totaled 16 steals – Sydney Mullings added three, while Tiani Bradford, Nitteayah Barfield, Hinkey and Williams swiped two apiece – and got the Geoducks to cough up 26 turnovers.
Evergreen (3-7, 2-2) was the seventh SOU opponent to commit at least 23 turnovers in eight games.
SOU shot 30-of-62 from the field and 21-of-24 at the free-throw line. The Raiders have missed no more than three free throws in their last seven games, shooting 86 percent from the stripe in that span.
They’ve defeated the Geoducks in eight straight meetings.
Northwest (Wash.) visits the Raiders at 1 p.m. Sunday, coming off its first CCC loss, a 69-48 decision Saturday at Oregon Tech.
