LAWRENCE, KS- True Freshman Gavin Potter (Mvskoke Creek) has provided quite the spark for Kansas Football since making his debut against Boston College in Week Three. On the season, Potter has accounted for 35 tackles overall and 26 solo tackles.

The last two weeks have been some of the best football the Jayhawks have played in years and Potter is a big reason why. KU’s leading tackler Dru Prox went down in the first half against West Virginia and has not played since. Potter has started in Prox’s role ever since.

In the Jayhawks near upset of Texas, Potter accounted for nine tackles including one and a half sacks. The game ended with a game-winning field goal from Texas Kicker Cameron Kicker, to give the Longhorns a 50-48 win.

The following week, Potter recorded seven tackles and six solo tackles in KU’s upset win over Texas Tech. It was Head Coach Les Miles’ first Big 12 Conference win at Kansas. With the win, the Jayhawks are now 3-5 on the season.

Miles spoke this week about what it means for Potter and younger players to be a part of program building wins, such as the Texas Tech victory stating, “They will eventually lead this team. (Steven) Parker and Potter and those guys see what is going on and they want more. They are young.”

He added, “They are true freshman playing football in the Big 12 Conference and playing really well. I think it will make a difference as they continue to mature.”

Next up for Potter and the Jayhawks is a rivalry game with Kansas State in the Sunflower Showdown. As a high school recruit, Potter originally committed to Kansas State last fall, but flipped his commitment to Kansas on National Signing Day in February.
