GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women’s basketball team opened their Horizon League schedule Thursday night against Northern Kentucky, but fell 61-52.
The Phoenix (1-2, 0-1) had two players score in double figures, led by Hailey Oskey (Oneida Tribe), who had a season-high 19 points. Maddy Schreiber added 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals off the bench. Cassie Schiltz also chipped in six points and six rebounds.
The Green Bay defense held Northern Kentucky to just 39.6 percent from the field, including 27.3 percent from three-point range. The Norse did not get many second opportunities on the offensive end, as they grabbed only nine offensive rebounds and scored seven second chance points.
Green Bay kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 15-11. That same trend continued in the second quarter, with NKU scoring 15, and Green Bay 11. The Phoenix faced a 30-22 deficit at the break.
Northern Kentucky continued to build its lead after halftime, building a 38-25 advantage before Green Bay went on a 6-0 run to trim its deficit to 38-31 with 4:46 to go in the third. However, the tug-of-war continued as the Norse countered and stretched its lead to 46-37 heading into the fourth. The Phoenix knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter, good for six of its 15 total points.
Green Bay could not pull any closer in the fourth, but did take advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
