(Lawrence, Kansas) – Two Haskell Indian Nations University Volleyball student-athletes will participate in the 2019 U.S. Women’s National Team open tryouts, which are taking place this weekend in Colorado Springs, Colo. Alliyah Richards (Oglala Lakota/Ute) and Sophia Honahni (Hopi/Navajo) will each head to the U.S. Olympic Training Center for the tryouts, which will be held March 1-3.
The duo will be competing for a spot on the U.S. Women’s National Team and/or the U.S. Collegiate National Teams program. There are 215 student-athletes from 88 colleges/universities that are expected to participate. U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly and his staff will direct the entire tryout process.
The tryout will involve four sessions with three waves per session. Both Richards and Honahni will participate in Friday’s “Blue Wave” session that commences at 7 p.m. CST. Richards will wear jersey number R43 and Honahni will wear N16.
All sessions of the tryout (minus the USA Training session on Sunday) will be streamed live at https://www.teamusa.org/usa-volleyball/video. USA Volleyball will use #USAVtryout as the event hashtag for photos, notes, quotes and stories posted to its social media platforms Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat under the handle @usavolleyball.
The U.S. Collegiate National Team program has three competition options:
- U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team – May 19-30, Japan (International)
- U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team – June 23-29, Anaheim, Calif. (Domestic)
- U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team – June 30-July 14, World University Games — Napoli, Italy (International)
Middle Hitter Alliyah Richards finished the 2018 season ranked 8th in Kills per Game (4.300) and ranked 16th in Total Kills (482). For her career, she has tallied 942 kills in 2,345 attempts, 331 digs where 228 of those digs came this 2018 season. She also has 70 block solos and 93 block assists totaling 163 blocks combined. She was named the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Tournament MVP and First-Team All-Conference
Libero Sophia Honahni, finished the season ranked 32nd in the country for Digs per Game at (5.270) and was named the Association of Independent Institutions Conference Libero of the Year. She finished the season with 564 digs and was named to the A.I.I. Conference First-Team as well.
Coached by Nanabah Allison-Brewer (Navajo), the Lady Indians team won the 2018 A.I.I. Conference Tournament for the first time in school history.
Selections for the U.S. Collegiate National Teams will be made by the end of March.
