Senior Jamie Roe (Cherokee Nation) from Tuba City, Arizona, plays forward for the Texas Tech Women’s Basketball Team.

The nutrition major hopes to become a sports nutritionist one day.

“I used to want to go into pharmacy, then I decided I wanted to be more apart of the prevention rather than the treatment,” Roe said.

Her parents played an important factor in her dedication on the court and in the classroom.

“All around, my parents taught me to outwork everybody to be successful, so I imply that in both of my academics and athletics, that’s what I try to live by,” Roe said.

She said although the time management can be overwhelming at times, the Marsha Sharp Center has been a great helping hand.

“I wouldn’t have wanted to come to a better university than Texas Tech,” said Roe. “I feel like they are so student-athlete oriented and it’s just awesome to come to a college town, like Lubbock, where they make you feel like you are at home.”

The academic counselor for women’s basketball, Shelby Ball, said Roe is one of the hardest-working students she has seen in her career.

“She is one of the people who is in here 20 hours a week, if that’s what it takes to get her work done and to get the A’s, because she wants to be the best in the classroom,” Ball said.

Ball said it is very important to see someone like Roe put in as much effort into school as she does.

“To see students working hard and striving for the best and wanting nothing but the best academically is great for the student and myself,” said Ball. “I can support them and build their confidence, which should in turn make them a better athlete on the court as well.”

Ball predicts where Roe will be in 10 years.

“I see her being as successful as they can be. I think again she will be great in her profession and top of the line because she always wants to be the best and she always strives for the best,” Ball said.

She said she sees Roe also making a difference in the community she will live in, giving back to the community and making sure everyone feels important regardless of where they stand in society.

Ball said Roe is a stellar person and someone everyone should admire.

“I learn something new from her all of the time, every time she comes into my office,” Ball said. “She reminds me to stay positive, be happy, enjoy life, and make a difference in someone’s day, I admire her for that and respect her a lot.”
