Jillian Weir (Mohawk) will represent Canada in the Women’s Hammer Throw at the Tokyo Olympics

Jillian Weir (Mohawk) will represent Canada at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the women’s hammer throw event, Athletics Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee announced on Saturday. She will be amongst the nation’s 57-athlete delegation.

Due to Covid protocols, Canadian athletes were selected on their previous performances and current international world rankings.

Weir competed collegiately at the University of Oregon, where she was two-time All-American. She is also the daughter of assistant coach Robert Weir, who was a three-time Olympian for Great Britain in the men’s hammer throw (1984) and men’s discus (1996, 2000).

“It means the world to represent Mohawk Nation! My native heritage is near and dear to my heart and to represent the Mohawk community at the Olympics is a dream come true.” said Weir.

The track and field competition at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics will run from Friday, July 30 to Sunday, August 8.
