Durango, Colorado – The New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls notched their first win of the 2024-25 campaign on Saturday afternoon over Western New Mexico 80-60.
After leading 38-33 at the half, the Cowgirls used a dominant third quarter to take control of the game, outscoring WNMU 22-9.
The Cowgirls outscored the Mustangs 42-24 in the paint and 25-8 in fast break points on Saturday.
Four Cowgirls scored in double-figures led by freshman Kapiolani Anitielu who had 15 points. Juliana Aragon had 14 points, Emma Christiano added 13 points while Caitlin Turnbow scored 10. Aragon had a game high eight assists.
Anitielu had a team high six rebounds and Amaris Valadez added a game high three steals.
Saturday’s win also marked the first career win for Cowgirls Head Coach Lindsey Fearing.
“I’m excited for what this group can do together even if we are young,” said Coach Fearing. “We are thrilled for what the season can bring for us and I’m proud of the work my staff and team are putting in.”
