ALAMOSA, Colo. — In a showdown within the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) and behind a 21 point performance by Kiiyani Anitielu, the Adams State University’s women’s basketball team clinched an impressive victory, triumphing 87-61 against Fort Lewis College while equaling the team’s three-point season record with seven three-pointers, totaling 175 for the season. This tied the record previously set by the 2010-11 squad over 33 games.
The opening quarter saw a tense exchange of plays between Fort Lewis College (FLC) and Adams State University (ASU). ASU took an early lead, buoyed by Christabel Longe’s accurate free throws. However, both teams showcased strong defensive strategies, with rebounds and steals shaping the game’s flow. Despite turnovers and fouls from both sides, ASU maintained a slight lead by the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, ASU continued their dominance, extending their lead over FLC. FLC struggled to keep pace, facing turnovers and missed opportunities. ASU capitalized on offensive plays, with Nyeniea John and Bri Linnear making notable contributions. Despite FLC’s defensive efforts, ASU retained control, displaying prowess on both offense and defense. Although FLC attempted a comeback, ASU’s solid defense and efficient offense proved difficult to overcome.
Throughout the second half, ASU held onto their lead, dictating the pace and execution of plays. Despite FLC’s attempts to narrow the gap, ASU’s strong defense and effective offense remained formidable. FLC grappled with turnovers and missed chances, while ASU capitalized on their possessions, steadily widening their lead in the third and fourth quarters.
While FLC managed some scoring plays, including successful free throws and jump shots, ASU responded with sturdy defensive rebounds and efficient scoring. ASU’s depth and strategic substitutions enabled them to maintain momentum and secure a decisive victory. Despite FLC’s efforts, ASU’s dominant performance ultimately sealed an 87-61 win.
Harmanie Dominguez of Adams State has solidified her reputation as a three-point specialist, setting an impressive record this season. In her 23 games played, Dominguez showcased exceptional shooting skills, sinking 75 three-pointers and establishing herself as a key asset for Adams State.
