Kiiyani Anitielu (Navajo/Samoan) paces Adams State with 14 Points in Loss to Regis University

ALAMOSA, Colo. — After trailing by as 12 points with just over three and a half minutes left in the first quarter, the Adams State University women’s basketball team rallied back in the second quarter before ultimately falling to Regis University, who rode a 20-point performance from Erin Fry to a 73-68 win over Adams State in Plachy Hall Jan. 6.

RU is 8-5 this season, 5-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.ASU slips to 9-5, 5-3 in the RMAC.

Fry had some help from Josey Ryan, who scored 16 points, and from Athena Saragoza’s 13 points. Kiiyani Anitielu scored 14 points to pace the Grizzlies. Harmaine Dominguez added a dozen.

ASU outscored its guests 24-9 in the second quarter and took a 38-27 lead to the locker room at the break. The Rangers returned the favor in the third quarter by outscoring the Grizzlies 26-12 and took a three-point lead to the last quarter.

Sharmayne Finley’s free throw gave Regis a 10-point lead with about 2 1/2 minutes to play. The Grizzlies mounted one last charge. Anitielu and Elaine Watson and i Anitielu converted driving layups. Harmaine Dominguez added a pair of free throws, and ASU was within four points with a minute to play.

Fry made a free throw for a five-point Rangers’ lead. Finley responded with a basket to cut the margin to three with 44 seconds left. Saragoza made two free throws with 14 seconds left to finish out the scoring.
