LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville head coach Jeff Walz and the women’s basketball team held their annual media day on Monday afternoon at Cardinal Arena.
Walz, entering his eighth year at the helm of the program, relayed his thoughts on the expectations for the program’s inaugural season in the Atlantic Coast Conference. He noted the school’s tough conference slate in addition to competitive nonconference games and the program’s continual focus on preparing teams for postseason success. Under Walz, Louisville has enjoyed five trips to at least the NCAA Sweet 16, with two resulting in national runner-up finishes.
The winningest coach in program history, Walz spoke the team’s makeup – boasting a five-member senior class as well as five freshmen. He discussed the contributions both groups can make as well as expectations of returnees Cortnee Walton, Megan Deines, and Emmonnie Henderson.
Walz pointed out the success seniors Sara Hammond, Bria Smith, Jude Schimmel, Shawnta’ Dyer, and Sheronne Vails have achieved and the progress each has made during the offseason.
Louisville’s five freshmen, highlighted by McDonald’s All-Americans Myisha Hines-Allen and Mariya Moore, also were a main talking point with the loss of six letterwinners.
Following Walz’s press conference, members of the media spoke with each student-athlete to get their thoughts on what’s in store for the ACC and feedback on preseason workouts.
On Wednesday, Walz and Hammond will participate in the ACC Media Day at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C.
