Mariah Stacona (Warm Springs) led NU with a game high 20 points in Win over Menlo College

ALLEJO, Calif. – Northwest University opened play in the Cal Maritime Classic with a 64-56 victory over Menlo College in a non-conference game this evening.

The Oaks came out fast in the first quarter to take a 12-9 lead, but in the second period, the Eagles outscored Menlo 19-7 to lead 28-19 at the half. Mariah Stacona (Warm Springs Tribe) scored 9 of her 20 points in the half to lead the Eagles. Miranda Langenhorst also contributed in the half with 8 points …and 7 rebounds. Neither team blistered the nets offensively as Northwest U shot 29 per cent and Menlo hit 28 per cent of their shots.

It was Menlo outscoring the Eagles in the third period, 23-17 to close the gap to 45-42, but Northwest U would answer in the fourth quarter with 19 points to the Oaks’ 14 to pull out the victory.

Northwest U (5-4) was led by Mariah Stacona‘s 20 points. Sophomore post Miranda Langenhorst had a solid game inside with 15 points and a game high 14 rebounds. Paige Burson hit 4 of 9 shots for 10 points and Hannah Carlson handed out 5 assists. Rebounding in the game was even at 34 rebounds per team, but NU totaled 15 offensive rebounds to the Oaks’ 8.

For Menlo College’s (5-3) Emma Briggs led the Oaks with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Three players scored 9 points for MC: Kelsey McKeon, Celina Pagan, and Aliyah Brantley. Brantley led the Oaks with 9 rebounds. Menlo was held to 25 per cent shooting from beyond the 3-point line.

“It was a good win for us tonight,” said Ken Crawford, NU head coach. “We needed to play 40 minutes against a very good Menlo team tonight and I felt we accomplished that. We continue to learn and we’re looking forward to be getting back on the court tomorrow.”

The Eagles continue play in the tournament as they wrap up play against host, Cal Maritime at 6:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex on the Vallejo campus.
