Box Score KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest University snapped a five game losing streak with an impressive win over St. Ambrose (RV) of Davenport, Iowa, tonight in a non-league game.
After trailing 49-45 at the half, Northwest U outscored the Queen Bees 21-11 in the third quarter to take a 66-60 lead. St. Ambrose would be unable to make up the difference in the final quarter as the Eagles would post the victory.
The turning point in the game would come with 5:44 left in the third quarter and NU leading by one, 55-54. The Eagles would go on a 10-5 run to close out the quarter aided by back-to-back 3-pointers by Jordan Asher and Mariah Stacona. A trey by SAU’s Deanna Busse would make it 64-58 with 1:17 left in the quarter, but Kristen Frey would hit a short jumper in the lane with 56 seconds on the clock to give NU a 66-60 lead at the end of the period.
The Eagles would stretch their lead to 11 in the fourth quarter with five straight points by Stacona and Asher adding another 3-pointer (77-66). A 5-0 St. Ambrose run with 56 seconds remaining would make it an 84-79 game, but two free throws by Stacona would end the scoring and clinch the win for NU.
Senior Jordan Asher scored a team high 26 points for Northwest U (3-5) hitting 5 of 7 from the 3-point line. Freshman guard Mariah Stacona (Warm Springs Tribe) scored 15 points and had 11 assists for the double-double while sophomore Charmaine Bradford scored 13 for the Eagles. NU shot 47 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line (14-17).
Said Ken Crawford, NU head coach after the game, “It was a solid win for the Lady Eagles tonight against a very good and well-coached team from St. Ambrose. I was impressed with the maturity and perseverence that our team showed. It was a great game to take us into Thanksgiving and help us get ready for league play.”
St. Ambrose (3-4) was led by 6-0 senior, Devan Griffin’s game high 32 points. Sydney Griner added 11 points with Hannah Bindner adding 9 for the Queen Bees. SAU shot 45 percent for the game while hitting 18 of 24 from the free throw line for 75 percent.
