OLYMPIA, Wash. – The NU Eagle women snapped a six game losing streak with a convincing 66-44 Cascade Conference victory over Evergreen tonight in the Constantino Recreation Center.
NU opened the game strong taking a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. But, Evergreen came back in the second quarter with a 6-0 run to start the period to take a 14-13 lead after Gabi Fenumiai free throw with 8:23 showing on the clock. The teams would battle back and forth until the third tie of the quarter at 20-20, when the Eagles would go on an 8-0 run punctuated by a 3-pointer by Mariah Stacona (Warm Springs Tribe) and a jumper by Victoria Makin. Charmaine Bradford‘s jumper with three seconds on the clock would give NU a 31-23 lead going into halftime.
The third period would prove to be the key for the Eagles as they would open the quarter with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 37-24. With 5:35 to go in the period, Evergreen would cut the NU lead to ten, 39-29, but a 7-0 run by Northwest U capped off by a Mariah Stacona 3-pointer would stretch their lead to 46-29 at the 2:46 mark. The Eagles would keep the pressure on as their offense would continue to score and after another 11-1 run, NU found themselves in front with their largest lead of the game, 57-30, with 49 seconds left in the quarter. The Eagles would maintain a comfortable margin the remainder of the game as Coach Ken Crawford would play all 13 players in uniform for the game as NU would close out the victory.
Hannah Carlson led all Northwest U (9-11, 4-6 CCC) scorers with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Paige Burson and Mariah Stacona each scored 9 points for NU as 11 out of 13 players scored in the game. The Eagles shot 42 per cent for the game and 43 per cent from the 3-point line. NU out rebounded the Geoducks, 45-43.
