Mariah Stacona (Warm Springs Tribe) leads Northwest Eagles with 15 points in Win over Evergreen State College

KIRKLAND, Wash. – A fast start would help Northwest University defeat the Evergreen State College, 60-42, in the teams’ Cascade Conference opener tonight in the NU Pavilion. NU bolted out to a 23-7 first quarter lead which would keep them in front the entire game

The NU defense would force 17 Evergreen turnovers in the first half as the Eagles would take a 32-22 lead at halftime. Miranda Langenhorst would have a big first half with 9 points and 10 rebounds for Northwest U. Evergreen would rally in the second period outscoring the Eagles 15-9 to close the gap at the break.

Evergreen would close the margin to 8 points, 32-24, just ten seconds into the second half, but NU would get 6 points in the paint from Hannah Carlson and Langenhorst to push the Eagle lead to 12, 38-26 with 7:06 left in the period. A 3-pointer by Mariah Stacona with 23 seconds left in the quarter would maintain the 12 point lead at 44-32 as the buzzer sounded. NU would slowly pull away in the fourth quarter and a Langenhorst jumper at the 1:28 mark would give Northwest U their largest lead, 60-40, they would go on to register their opening win in league play.

Mariah Stacona (Warm Springs Tribe) led Northwest U (4-4, 1-0 CCC) with 15 points including 5 for 8 shooting from the 3-point line. Miranda Langenhorst dominated the backboards with 15 rebounds and added 13 points and Hannah Carlson shot 60 per cent from the floor contributing 13 points for the Eagles. NU held the rebounding edge with 42 rebounds to the Geoducks’ 36.

Evergreen (1-5, 0-1 CCC) was led by Asiyah Davis’s 11 points. Corina Tacardon and Gabi Fenumiai each scored 8 points for the Geoducks who shot 30 per cent for the game. The Geoducks were plagued by 28 turnovers.

Northwest U will travel to Northern California on Friday to play in the Cal Maritime Classic taking on Menlo College and then playing tournament host, Cal Maritime on Saturday night.
